SECOND LIFE VIEWER CHANGES : WILL THEY EFFECT YOUR PORN SHOOTS?

Shot on my favourite third party viewer for photography. Niran's. Innovative features on the way out?

I thought our readers would find this information interesting. It outlines some changes coming to third party Second Life Viewers. The picture above was taken on "Niran's" viewer. Like Kirsten's, and now with viewers such as Firestorm, and Exodus, many Second Life users, photographers, movie makers have come to like the innovations and outside the box thinking which can come with third party viewer development. However new rules which may stifle innovations, or even see them removed, will I'm sure make many of us unhappy at the thought.

Although, some of privacy rules being implemented can never really be too bad i guess.

New additions to the Third Party Viewer Policy from the Phoenix website. You can view the full post here.


Today LL announced some additions to the Third Party Viewer Policy which will have some impact on our users. I'll just explain them briefly here but will discuss them in more detail as well as our reaction to them during our Office Hour on tuesday at 2pm SLT.

2.a.iii : You must not provide any feature that circumvents any privacy protection option made available through a Linden Lab viewer or any Second Life service.

This means viewers will not be allowed to have true online status. We will remove this feature in the next Phoenix update. LL has also indicated they intend to break scripts ability to look up a users online status except for the owner and creator of the script. No time frame has been indicated for when this will happen.


2.i : You must not display any information regarding the computer system, software, or network connection of any other Second Life user.
 and
2.j : You must not include any information regarding the computer system, software, or network connection of the user in any messages sent to other viewers, except when explicitly elected by the user of your viewer.


This means that Viewer identification tags are now a policy violation. LL has indicated that they will be breaking the viewer tagging system for ALL third party viewers between Tuesday and Wednesday with the region updates. This also breaks color tags in our viewers.


2.k : You must not provide any feature that alters the shared experience of the virtual world in any way not provided by or accessible to users of the latest released Linden Lab viewer.

This means that third party viewers will no longer be allowed to innovate features which relate to the shared experience unless LL has the features in their viewers first. However LL has indicated an interest and preference in working with third party viewers to develop such features together.


Again, I will be discussing all of these changes, how they will effect our users and our viewer project on Tuesday during our Office hour at 2pm SLT. I'll provide more information on the location and live stream coordinates within the next few days.

Top 50 Second Life Sims, September 2011: Amid Sexy Chat and Porn, Gerontology Education Training

Courtesy Louis Platini's Metaverse Business, a Second Life/OpenSim analytics company that gathers publicly accessible in-world data for its clients, here's the top 50 most popular sims in Second Life for September 2011, listed according their average visitor count, the unique visitor range at any given period, and the sim's rank the previous month, and once again, it raises the eternal question: Is there be any true bliss on Bukkake Bliss Island?

Franks Place, a classy jazz nightclub where men wear tuxes and women ballroom gowns, remains a top site amid the raw sexual and naked experiences that dominate this list (as they usually do.) When people are skeptical that SL can grow as large as IMVU, I always refer them to these rankings: A large portion of SLers are already chatting and flirting in a way not unlike IMVU (just more pornily.)

Another surprise: A relatively new entry to the top fifty is Gerontology Education (direct teleport here), where real world nursing students train with virtual patients.

TOP 10 NEW HAIR STYLES FOR PORNSTARS

As every woman on Second Life knows, the 2011 HAIR FAIR is going on now. All of the hairs there are sold with a percentage going to charity. And its also become the place where designers "launch" their new hairs for the year.

And we've got the TOP 10 BEST NEW HAIRSTYLES according to Iris Ophelia, who does the OPHELIA'S GAZE FASHION REPORT in Hamlet Au's blog.

The styles are not only great (you can see my favorite in the pic above), there's lots of great innovations.
Tattoo hairbases are becoming the norm as most of us know. There's also better hair dye dual color hairs, hair that you can "grow" by adding length to them

It seems like there's an expo or fair of some sort every month, but somehow Hair Fair, one of the originals, still manages to set itself apart year after year. Hair Fair benefits the Wigs For Kids charity-- and this year a portion of every sale will go to this outstanding cause. I'll be sharing my 10 favorite styles, but today I'm starting off with the first five!

Many designers opt to launch new brands at Hair Fair, and this one definitely shows tons of promise. I was a little unsure about this odd cut before I tried it on. My real life mother, shopping over my shoulder, was not fond of the crooked bangs. (She also plays SL.) It's easy to forget the extra work it takes to make these details of imperfection in Second Life-- a sign of poor workmanship in RL is a sign of care and quality in an SL creation. I adore this style, but it's not for everyone.

If you're looking to evoke the 18th century, Exile's Marie Antoinette-inspired style may be the obvious choice, but this style by Amacci, paired with their free hair bases, is a very elegant alternative. Many designers have included tattoo layer hairbases with their styles this year, so I'm not sure why Amacci's are packaged separately-- just don't forget them when you pick up this updo.

Lamb's newest texture pack is another example of the beauty of imperfection in Second Life. While many perfectionists hate the trend of visible roots sweeping SL hair, Lamb has gone a step further and created a texture pack that shows 2 dye jobs growing out over natural colour. The result are unique fading tones that are quite unlike the deliberately color-tipped textures that have been in SL for ages.

Of course I had to find a super sweet style, and Wasabi Pills satisfied that perfectly. They've released a couple bow-accented styles for the fair, but this one takes the cake. It doesn't look too young, and the optional color-changing headband saves me the hassle of looking for the perfect accessory for my outfit.

Hair Fair Bandana, by Ivy Graves of Illusory [Available from banada stalls on all four Hair Fair sims]

On Bandana Day, traditionally the final day of the fair, fashionistas wear designer-created bandanas and scarfs to show their support for Wigs For Kids and all those who are losing or have lost their hair due to cancer treatments. This ultra-feminine bandana is my favorite, not just this year, but of every Hair Fair to date!  Add a hairbase or some bangs for a look that will work long after this year's Bandana Day on July 15th.

Bombshell, by Sebastien Aries of Shag [Click here to teleport to Shag at HAIR FAIR]

Sometimes hairstyles really call out to me to buy a specific color, and to me this style just begs to be worn blonde! I'm not usually a fan of Shag hairs to be perfectly honest, as they often don't quite fit my head properly, but the cropped curls of this sassy short style are absolutely perfect and it required very minimal adjustment on my part. Love at first sight!

Pretty Words, by Bubbles Clawtooth of Clawtooth [Click here to teleport to Clawtooth at HAIR FAIR]

Pretty Words is a very versatile long style, with a prim attachment to add extra length to the bottom. I found it a little awkward to make this attachment blend naturally with the rest of the hair, but it's picture perfect for snapshots. I adored the subtle details at the back of the neck as well, which goes to show how much care went into this style's construction.

I would have loved to have this style a couple weeks ago for my post about Second Life Lolita style, it's absolutely ideal! Beautiful ringlet curls like this can be difficult to achieve in SL,  so naturally a good curly style can be hard to find. This isn't for the casual hair-curler, but it's a great style to top off more outlandish ensembles.

Tilda, like the Clawtooth style I mentioned earlier, comes with attachments to add extra length, but where this hair really shines is in it's beatiful, soft-looking waves. There's a kind of natural and haphazard beauty to this style that is again all to hard to capture in a Second Life hairstyle, and Tilda manages it marvellously.

Fine, also by as001 Littlething of [kik]

Speaking of haphazard beauty, this second style from [kik] definitely takes it to the limit. I feel like it might almost be cheating to include two styles from this designer on my list, but [kik] has quickly become one of my top hair brands in spite of their relatively small line. as001 manages to make incredibly natural and ernest looking hairstyles-- not the hair of a supermodel in a magazine, but the hair of a cute girl at a bus stop. it's a grounded kind of beauty that SL fashion desperately needs more of.

IMPORTANT: Age Verification

This is really important for anyone who plays Second Life.

Age Verification Changes in Second Life

What an incredible breath of fresh air. Gone is the age verification system that had people from all over the world sending passport, driver's license and SSN information for verification...yea!

To replace it a new age verification process, and this may sound familiar, you enter your date of birth, check a box verifying that it is true, then submit.

Yes, just that simple.

Go to your Dashboard, you'll find it under the Me menu, then Account and on that drop-down(mine always seems to be open to Account) choose Age Verification. There you'll find the boxes to enter your date of birth. If you have already given this information to Linden at some point, the boxes will be already filled in, mine were, then, put a checkmark in the box verifying that the information is true and submit.

Submitting this information is the first step, now go to your Preferences in the viewer (Ctrl+P) or (Me menu, Preferences, General) and change your preferences to allow you to view all content (General, Moderate and Adult).

So, there you are. If you've avoided checking out the incredible part of Second Life that is Adult because you were concerned about giving your private information...that bar has been lifted. Come in and see what we have to offer. 

I think you'll like it.

It's really funny for the first half. The voice work is surprisingly good for a SL film. It's outstanding. They sound great and Kirk has some really funny lines.

Also, the set is great. The ship looks like the ship. The characters look like the characters.

Credit where credit is due. It looks like the show!!

Then it gets a little weird. OK, a lot weird...with Captin Kirk going through...um...a very big fetish change on the planet Boobyopilis, a planet with nothing but very big boobed women.

SL RUMORS: Microsoft taking over SL???

Our friend Eddi Haskell has an interesting take on the latest SL rumors of Microsoft buying or bought Second Life, following the surprise announcement that PHIL LINDEN is stepping down.

Who knows if it's true. Really, it's all just rumors. But I try to pass the juicy ones on!

Why would Microsoft want to buy Second Life? Is their truth behind the rumors?

As I reported here yesterday, rumors persist that Microsoft is still interested in buying Linden Labs / Second Life, and that serious negotiations are continuing. Fueling this rumor is the unexplained and sudden departure of Phil Rosedale from Linden Labs, which I have to admit, is rather suspicous.

Another site, Go Rumors, published this on October 21:

"Early this month, there was a running speculation that Microsoft may have acquired Linden Lab, the company that is behind the popularvirtual reality game, Second Life. Word was that Redmond may have either actually acquired the whole company or is at least in the final stages of talks before acquisition. The rumor mills also indicated a possible inclusion of the popular game on Xbox Live, Microsoft’s online gaming network"

Why would giant Microsoft, a company that usually does not pay attention to fringe web applications (and boy, are we Second Lifers considered a fringe in Redmond, Washington) be interested in purchasing Second Life?  Here are some reasons that I can think of.

1. Price:  Second Life is privately held.  The major stockholders (stockholder is not a correct word for a closely held company but you get the idea) want to cash out now, and are willing at a less expensive price than they did before.   Almost everything of some value can be sold at some price.

2. Amassing a social networking portfolio:  Microsoft realized that yet again, they have lost out on a web phenomenon.  They lost the the search space to Google and have yet to play catch-up, and lost the social networking space (they were never really in it) to Facebook, and have yet to play catch-up if they ever can.  Second Life has the added allure of three-dimensionality. They may simply be buying up as many social networking sites as the can in the hopes that one can be built into the "next big thing".

3. Technology:  As much as many of us complain about the poor performance of Second Life lately, there is still some might advance technology that Linden Labs can lay claim too, most notably in hosting massive amounts of content and scripted applications at one time, and in avatar portability (the future) between different environments.

4. The People:  Microsoft might want to lay their hands on the people at Linden Labs, since hiring and building a similar workforce would take a long time, and be far more expensive than paying who they want to stay.

5. The Users: The 200,000 - 300,000 heavy users of Second Life represent a potential audience to sell Microsoft products and services too.  We also are influentials in the social networking and gaming space, and could recommend an expanded and improved Second Life to others. 

6. The Future:  Virtual worlds and related technology have yet to take off to become the billions of real dollars / euros (name your currency) that was projected from this space during the peak of inflated expectations for Second Life back in 2006 / 2007.  However, Microsoft may still have visionaries who can see the future and want to get in on it now. 

Do I think that Microsoft is purchasing Second Life?  Well the X-box tie-in is interesting. I will tell you this. Serious industry analysts are not laughing as much at this suggestion as they were a few weeks ago.
