Biography:
Edwin van der Sar is a vastly experienced goalkeeper for Manchester United. First choice for the Red Devils since arriving from Fulham in the summer of 2005, the tall, imposing 'keeper has provided the stability and confidence that manager Sir Alex Ferguson had searched for between the United posts since the departure of Peter Schmeichel in 1999, and has been a key part of a side that has won three consecutive league titles, as well as the Champions League in 2008. Edwin also won that competition with his first club, Ajax, with whom he spent nine immensely successful years before moving to Italy with Juventus in 1999. Two years later he joined newly-promoted and ambitious Fulham and his presence was vital as the West London club established themselves in the Premiership. When Ferguson came calling, many saw the then 34-year-old's move to United as one for the short-term, but more than four years on his form shows no sign of waning, with recognition as UEFA Club Goalkeeper of the Year for 2009 and a Premiership record of 1,311 minutes without conceding a goal testament to Edwin's continued excellence. A veteran of three World Cups, Edwin is the Netherlands' most capped footballer, having appeared 130 times for his country before his retirement from international football in October 2008.
